CFTC renews Polymarket settlement probe, Reuters reports

Reuters reports renewed CFTC scrutiny of Polymarket’s 2022 settlement. The original order concerned unregistered event-contract trading and a $1.4M penalty.

The CFTC is again investigating whether Polymarket breached its 2022 settlement, Reuters reported on October 27, citing two people familiar with the matter.

The reported inquiry examines access controls for US users on its international platform and US advertising. Reuters said an earlier inquiry ended last year without charges. Prediction Frontier has not independently verified the current investigation.

What the 2022 order required

The CFTC’s January 3, 2022 order settled charges against Blockratize Inc., doing business as Polymarket, over off-exchange event-based binary options and operating without the required exchange designation or registration.

It imposed a $1.4 million civil monetary penalty. Its undertakings required Polymarket to stop offering access to noncompliant markets and wind them down by January 14, 2022, then certify compliance by January 24.

The agency’s contemporaneous announcement said the penalty reflected substantial cooperation. The settlement was an administrative enforcement order, rather than a new finding about the company’s conduct in 2026.

Operator compliance and trader misconduct are separate questions

The reported settlement review concerns the platform operator’s obligations. Prediction Frontier’s separate report on election-trading investigations addresses Polymarket’s monitoring of participants.

A regulator investigating possible noncompliance has not thereby established a breach. The published 2022 order provides the legal background; Reuters’ source-based report provides the new development. They should not be read as a fresh adjudication against Polymarket.
